Breastfeeding is a rewarding experience but it can also present challenges, especially when it comes to ensuring sufficient milk supply. For new mothers seeking ways to boost their milk production, there are several proven methods. Below are some top strategies. It’s important to note that while these can be effective strategies, if you have any concerns about your milk supply after trying them out, it’s important to consult a lactation consultant to troubleshoot any potential issues.
1. Skin-to-skin contact
Skin-to-skin contact can help to boost milk supply. This technique involves placing your baby directly against your bare skin shortly after birth and during the early months. This contact is essential from birth, not only for emotional bonding but also for stimulating oxytocin, a hormone crucial for milk production. Studies have shown that babies who engage in frequent skin-to-skin contact can effectively stimulate breast milk supply. This contact encourages more frequent feeding, thereby promoting increased milk production.

2. Frequent nursing and demand feeding
Another great way to boost milk supply is using the principle of demand and supply. The more often your baby breastfeeds, the more milk you will produce. Aim to breastfeed your baby at least 8 to 12 times in a 24-hour period. Respond promptly to your baby's hunger signals; doing so can stimulate your breasts to produce more milk naturally.

3. Ensure Proper Latching
Ensuring your baby is latching correctly is essential to boosting milk supply. A proper latch will maximise milk extraction and minimise discomfort and nipple soreness, helping to boost your milk supply. Consider consulting with a lactation consultant to perfect your technique. A good latch involves the baby taking a large portion of the areola into their mouth, not just the nipple.
Mastering latch and attachment can take time. Read our top tips here.
4. Use Both Breasts
Encourage your baby to feed from both breasts during each feeding session. Start with one breast, and when the baby slows down or stops, switch to the other. This practice can stimulate more milk production and ensure both breasts are emptied regularly, which is key for maintaining a healthy supply.
5. Pumping Between Feeds
Introducing pumping sessions, also known as ‘power pumping sessions’, between feeds can help maintain and boost milk supply. A breast pump can effectively draw milk from the breasts, sending signals to increase production. It also allows others to feed the baby, giving you a much-needed break.

6. Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet
Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining and boosting milk supply. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay adequately hydrated. A balanced diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and proteins is also essential.
Some mothers find that incorporating galactagogues can help to support their milk supply. All of our products contain natural milk boosting ingredients including oats, brewers yeast and flaxseed.
